2020 Buick Regal GS 0-60, Price, Interior – Here in America, Buick has certainly been facing an uphill battle. In China, they’re what’s known as a prestige brand. Purchased by thousands of government officials and young people. They’re just a really desirable brand hugely successful for GM overseas. So what’s going on with Buick here in America, well to find out they’ve loaned me the sportiest and most youthful offering they offer here in the states.
This is a 2020 Buick Regal GS, the performance version of basically just the Opel Insignia rebadged overseas. So it goes head-to-head with ultra-competitive compact sports sedans like the Acura TLX, the Kia Stinger, the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, etcetera. So how does the Regal GS stack up that’s what we’re here to find out?
2020 Buick Regal GS Changes
So many compact sports sedan segment design is very competitive. This is what’s gonna draw a lot of people to the brand. Especially for Buick, this brand is what’s known as an old person’s brain. Still have that old person stigma here in America that they’ve been trying to shake free off for years. So as you can see, the look for the Regal GS definitely is very unlike the Buick if you guys look at the Buicks from like two decades ago.
It really is just a rebadged version of the Opel Insignia. A car that’s built-in Germany for the European market. So I think they really had a great place to start. I actually reviewed this car last year at the media launch when Buick first showed off this thing. And a year later, that imagination made any changes to the styling of the vehicle. I really still think it’s one of the best-looking sedans out there. It’s got a unique front fascia, a unique piano-black grille that the GS model gives you with the Buick. 3 shield badge and these LED headlights that you see are actually optional, frustratingly there is a $500 option part of an appearance package.
So they’re inexpensive because they include the LED running lights, LED turn signals, LED low and high beams. No fog lights; instead, you have these non-functional air intake scoops down here at the lower fascia to show that this is the GS model. Buick actually introduced a new veneer trim for 2020. however it’s not available on the GS, that model does come standard with LED headlights. And its own unique front fascia, but it’s only available with the 2-liter four-cylinder as opposed to the V6 that this one gives you. Overall I think the Regal GS still looks great. It’ll definitely draw in a lot of buyers for its clean and elegant appearance at the front fascia.
Now the sleek looks of the front fascia are also carried over when you look at the side profile of the Regal GS. This is one seriously stylish looking sedan with some really good proportions. I think Buick did a really good job styling the actual silhouette of the Regal GS. Now, this GS model has its own unique set of wheels about the rest of the Regal lineup. These are a 19-inch wheel wrapped in 245/40 series tires now. Compared with the previous generation Buick used to offer a polished 20-inch wheel. So these look oh these are looking a little bit small when you look at the rest of the body.
I do love the red-painted front Brembo brake calipers this particular one gives you. Then I kind of wish it was echoed over into the rear. It looks really fantastic with this white tri-coat exterior color, which is a $1,100 option now. When this new regal came out, Buick actually stretched the wheelbase by about four inches compared to the previous generation at 111 inches long. And 192 points nine inches long this is a little bit longer than something like an Acura TLX, a BMW 3-series, the Kia Stinger is about two inches longer than this particular vehicle. And in going with the rest of the sleek sedan theme, this has actually got more of a sloping rear roofline to kind of give it a little bit more of a coupe look like.
At the rear end of the 2020 Buick Regal GS, you can see the design is a little bit more on the planar side. I think it kind of resembles a lot of Hyundai and Kia products. Also, I don’t particularly love the taillights, I mean they are kind of an LED combination with an incandescent turn signal. So I think Buick could have done something a little bit more distinctive. Definitely, a full LED design would have benefited this vehicle. I just think the incandescent turn signal looks cheap. You have a very subtle body-colored rear lift spoiler, and then down here at the lower fascia, it’s got more piano black plastic.
The inside of the Regal GS I hope you guys like black because it’s the only interior color option available. I think Buick should have considered offering like a brown on the GS or red leather. Now, these Recaro seats are standard equipment. They’re massaging, they’re heated and cooled. They offer like 14 ways of adjustability, so really good seats. You can actually school these bolsters here if you need to.
The seats look fantastic, they’re honestly a little too sporty for how sporty this vehicle actually is. They look like they belong in a Cadillac CTS-V product. I like the flat-bottom steering wheel that you get. And there’s just you know a lot of shiny chrome trim that you see here that’s very typical of GM along with a nice little GS badge here on the rocker panels. Now getting into the inside, the GS small is slightly lower than the regular Sportback. But it doesn’t feel absurdly low, this is still again kind of like a luxury sedan as well.
2020 Buick Regal GS Engine
Now under the hood of the 2020 Buick Regal GS, we find a powertrain that’s a little bit on the plain side if I’m being honest. It’s some good engine, and Buick actually made a big switch for this generation from the previous model. The old 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder replaced with a 3.6-liter direct injection, a naturally aspirated V6.
It’s the first time we’ve seen Buick put a V6 in their midsize sedan in the last 13 years. The previous generation didn’t offer a V6 for quite some time. The numbers are pretty good 310 horsepower and 282 foot-pounds of torque. Now it is more horsepower than what you got in the previous generation like 40 more horsepower. But it’s also down on torque by about 10 to 15-pound feet of torque. So again, those turbo engines provide more torque, but this V6 does sound better. If you guys want a naturally aspirated engine, this is one of the few vehicles that still offer that.
Now it calls goes out through a 9-speed automatic transmission. It’s a GM source transmission, so the six-speed manual that the previous generation is gone. And that old six-speed Automatic been replaced with this 9 speed automatic. It’s a twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system. It’s optional in the standard regal sport back. In fuel economy actually stayed the same versus the previous generation, it’s rated at 19 in the city 27 on the highway. The difference you can now use regular gas in this v6. As opposed to the old turbo forwards required premium fuel.
2020 Buick Regal GS Price and Release Date
This fuel economy is slightly less than what you get in something like an Acura TLX. But slightly more than what you get in the Kia stinger, which arguably has like 50 more horsepower. Now the Regal GS is heavier than most of the competition. This one as it sits is pretty fat. It weighs 4,200 pounds that’s roughly 3 to 400 pounds heavier than the competition.
Buick Regal GS is definitely an enticing option. Especially if you guys are looking for something a little bit different than most of the competition. I think Buick definitely nailed the design right from most angles. I believe the GS model is sufficiently quick in terms of the acceleration, it handles well, it rides well, and it’s practical. In the interior, it has a huge trunk to boot. I love the sports pack design, I love the fact that it’s not something that you see every day. Because Buick really only sold about 14,000 of these in all of 2019.
