2020 Mazda CX-30 Dimensions, Price, Specs – You may have noticed that SUVs are instead on-trend at the moment. Everybody’s doing them, and everybody’s got more than one of them. Take Mazda, for example, they’ve got the big CX-5 and the smaller CX-3. Which leave space for something in the middle.
2020 Mazda CX-30 Changes
Say hello then to the 2020 Mazda CX-30. Confusingly there’s already a cx4, but it’s only sold in China. So the CX30 is the halfway mid-sized SUV that Mazda is bringing out in Europe. It’s taking on some huge hitters ranging from the Range Rover Evoque, Volvo XC 40 and Volkswagen T Rock to the Toyota CHR, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Karoq and about a bajillion more.
Mazda says its main attributes are looking beautiful, being easy to drive and offering a bit of fun behind the wheel. But how much fun, how easy to operate and how nice looking? We’ll let you judge that last one. But it’s undoubtedly distinctive with chunky black cladding down below and all smooth sexy lines up on top.
Before we get to the drive, let’s have a bit of a poke around inside. There’s a very premium air in here. With some very nice quality plastics. And in this slightly swanky version some leather as well. The infotainment system is slick, quick and easy to use using this central dial rather than a touchscreen. Although the screen is a little bit small compared to some other rivals.
Space is suitable for upfront and not too bad in the back. Headroom is very good for tall adults. Although if you’ve also got tall adults in the front where legroom could be a little bit tight. The boots, not a lousy size if not quite enormous. But you can fold the rear seats flat for extra space.
Mazda set out its stall on the priorities for the 2020 Mazda CX-30. With the looks and the interior as the big selling points closely followed by driving a pleasure. With a history of cars that have fun behind the wheel, you’d expect a Mazda to be engaging. But it is also an SUV, so it has to be comfortable and easy to use as well.
2020 Mazda CX-30 Engine
On the latter two points, the CX30 does a very reasonable job. It’s impressively quiet at motorway speeds, and the ride is comfortable too. But is it fun? If you’ve come to the CX30 with absolutely no expectations. Then you are unlikely to be unimpressed. It’s easy to drive, it stays nice and flat while cornering and it doesn’t feel to SUV like. Benefit feels almost more like a hatchback when you’re behind the wheel.
Engine-wise you’ve got two choices. While the rest of the car industry thinks that the way forward for cutting emissions. And improving fuel economy is to make the engine smaller. And put turbocharges on them, Mazda does not agree.
So instead you’ve got a pair of 2-liter on-turbocharged petrol engines. The first is called the Skyactiv-G. It’s got 120 horsepower, and it’s okay. It gets the job done, but you do have to rev it quite hard to get the most out of it. The second is a very clever bit of engineering called Skyactiv-X. I won’t bore you with the details, but the Mazda says that it offers the lowdown grunt of a petrol engine. But with the cheaper fuel of petrol, so does it.
Well no, not entirely, there is a bit more grunt at low revs than you might expect to find in a standard petrol engine. But it’s nowhere near what you get for diesel. And you still have to rev it pretty hard to see the full 180 horsepower. It just doesn’t have that much urgency if you’re looking for that Mazda fun factor.
Fuel economy compared with other smaller turbocharged rivals looks to be pretty similar. But the co2 impressions are impressively low. With no diesel version of the CX30 coming to the UK. This is probably the best alternative. You can get both engines with all-wheel-drive or an automatic gearbox. But to be absolutely honest, front-wheel drive and the manual gearbox is almost people should meet.
2020 Mazda CX-30 Price and Release Date
2020 Mazda CX-30 is a beautiful car in an SUV market that rewards sexiness. So that alone should be enough to have quite a lot of customers sniffing around it. It’s not quite the dynamic fun to drive small SUV that Mazda aficionados might have been hoping for. But it is well made comfortable and decent enough to drive.
It also comes with plenty of trim choices and a lot of standard kits. So you should be getting quite a lot of money for your car. Don’t be surprised to see quite a few of them on the road. And don’t be surprised to see quite a few heads turns, as it goes past.
